So...exactly how does one start teaching?
I start my first year of teaching in 3 weeks. I go Tuesday for an orientation. I could puke I am so nervous. I think I'll be fine once it gets underway, but I just feel I have no idea how to kick off the school year. They say you gotta come in strict and let out the reins as you go. I am going to try. I'm planning on doing a writing assignment the very first day. Assigned seats, expected behavior, rewards and repercussions, and procedures. Although procedures baffle me. What system works best for having kids turn in their papers? I think I will do separate "in" and "out" boxes for each class (since I only have 3 or 4. I also read that it's good to have something on the board that tells the kids what to do which will keep them (supposedly) quieter as they enter the room. I have some students with attention deficits and I know the room should be simple yet attractive. Yet, I have no money to spend on such things. I hope the school will help me out there. Anyway, if you read this, I could really use some prayers. And if you're a teacher, I could use some advice.

Once while observing at NCHS, a teacher told me that everytime he walks into the classroom, he pauses before passing into the room and thinks to himself, "I am God." If you can get past the blasphme, he said that this helped to maintain control more than any other method. Hehehehehe
I can do prayers much better than advice.
p.s. you should turn on the RSS feed in your options. :)
Hi Angie...this is Rebekah Kaufmann. I don't know if you remember me. I'm Tami's sister. MOrgan's cousin. Anyway, my husband is a teacher. He doesn't blog so I thought I'd just share a couple things from his experience. By the way, he said your husband is a teacher so you probably already know what you're doing.
anyway, the thing he learned from his very bad first day of teaching was that he NEVER gives kids a choice in anything that first day. So he always has their names on pieces of paper on their desks when they walk in to the room. They have a small "assignment" type of thing on their desks to fill out right away. And he doesn't hardly smile at all. Seriously. I think the hardest thing for him to learn that first year was that it's not important that the kids like him...just respect him. Also, don't wear pink!! At least for a guy...any feminine color is a bad thing! He always says the first day is the most important day of the year. So, hopefully that helps a little. Your plan of action already sounds good!
Hope this wasn't annoying...
I enjoyed your blog. I just stumbled on to it.
talk to you later,
rebekah
what is an RSS feed? and thank you to ll and rebekah, I appreciate the advice, however blasphemous.
If you set the RSS feed to "on" under your options, it allows me to use a news reader to check your blog. Basically it will inform me when you update, so I don't have to remember to check it randomly on the chance you wrote something new.
So.. did you start yet? How'd it go?
